Kenny, an alert reader and follow drill team devotee, pointed me to some fantastic archival footage of a Philadelphia drill team called Alpha Omega Phi. You can subscribe to his videos here, but I hope to learn more about the team and when these videos were shot. Also included on his YouTube channel are footage of the Youth of East Logan and assorted others:
I dug this video out of YouTube from 2007. Anyone know if this drum squad is still around or where this performance happened?
According to organizer "Chops" (seen below in the yellow sweatshirt), The Gold Coast Buccaneers have been around since the 1960s in some form or another. Recently revived under his instruction, the team consists of mostly novice steppers who meet in the school yard behind Huey Elementary at 52nd and Pine in West Philadelphia. Expect big things in the next couple of years from the Gold Coast Buccaneers!
Here they are seen performing at the Friends of Malcolm X Memorial Park's annual Easter Egg Hunt:
I don't have any contact information for Gold Coast, but Chops works at Bottom of the Sea, a seafood take-out restaurant catty-corner to Huey Elementary at 52nd and Pine, or interested parties can find him and the team in the schoolyard most weekdays.
The Crestmont Steppers of Willow Grove, PA have been around since April of 2006.
